Tourism and leisure

Here are a few ideas of what you can visit around La Madeleine:

Incredible castles and gardens :

  • The Beaumesnil castle (Eure) and its grounds: about 30 km away from the house. Built in the 17th century, there is a library and a museum of bookbinding.
  • The Saint Germain de Livet castle (Calvados): about 20 km away from the house. A typical Renaissance (it was first built during the 15th century) castle, very representative of le Pays d’Auge.
  • Crèvecoeur castle (Calvados): about 37 kms away from the house. An incredible castle from the Middle-Ages, which was amazingly preserved over the centuries.
  • Pays d’Auge gardens in Cambremer (Calvados): about 34 km away from the house. A series of gardens (landscaped around various themes!) surrounds a very ancient farm (it was built during the 15th century) on a hilly area.
  • Vendoeuvre castle (Calvados) and its grounds and gardens: about 55km away from the house. A breathtaking token of the 15th century. A stunning collection of miniature furniture, automatons and various types of gardens such as the “surprise water garden”.
  • Canon castle (Calvados) and its grounds and gardens: about 47 km away from the house. The entire park (landscaped during the 18th century) has been listed as a historical site.

Estates and animal life

  • Saint Hippolyte estate (Calvados): about 22 km away from the house. Historical and agricultural heritage of the Pays d’Auge, it is a place for cheese tasting and discovery!
  • Haras du Pin (the pine stud farm) (Orne): about 56 km away from the house. Locals say it is the equivalent of Versailles in terms of horses! The place offers various activities.
  • Zoological park of Cerza in Lisieux : about 27 km away from the house. A giant park where animals roam almost free… a great adventure to experience with your family!
  • La Dame Blanche farm in Saint Julien de Mailloc (Calvados) : about 10 km away from the house. A great way for children to discover local species of pets and wild animals.

Sport:

  • Orbec’s tennis club and an outdoor tennis court at La Chapelle Yvon.
  • La Rigaudière stable : Karine Bourgeois
  • Orbec’s horseriding school: do not hesitate to ring Madeline, the new head of the club.
  • Golf: the nearest golf course (9 holes) is La Bévière.
  • Fishing is one of the local prides : you can fish in the Orbiquet River that runs down the house, or in the dedicated areas such as Le Domaine de l’Orbiquet, right after Orbec, or many others in the neighbourhood : Saint Martin de Bienfaite, Saint Pierre de Mailloc, Saint Cyr du Ronceray.
  • Hiking: you will find in the house a guidebook on hiking in the neighbourhood (17 tours) and many other ideas on the Calvados tourist office’s website.
